Your first time at a drug and alcohol rehab can be intimidating. Even if you have made up your mind to quit an addiction, the unknown may cause you nervousness. However, knowing what to expect puts your mind at ease and allows you to come prepared.

Alcohol Rehab

We visited the Ontario premier drug and alcohol rehab, and here are some of the general activities we observed;-

Check-in

Once you arrive at the rehab center, some staff members will give you a complete interview to learn more about you. This information is essential as it helps tailor your treatment plan.

Detoxification

It is the process of ridding your body of the toxic substances one has been abusing. Though it is usually a challenging process for many, it is essential to cleanse your body’s readiness for the journey ahead.

It would help if you appreciated that everyone has a different detox experience. If one had been using high dependency drugs such as heroin, benzodiazepines, or morphine, one might experience withdrawal symptoms. However, worry not, as the experts will be there every step of the way, sometimes offering medications to ease the symptoms.

Therapy

Individual Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a standard treatment modality in addiction treatment centers. CBT studies one’s response to particular triggers. Once the therapist identifies your reactions, they guide you on new and healthier responses to such stimuli.

These one-on-one therapies provide a safe environment for the patient to open up and share their concerns and fears. This way, the therapist can develop tools and alternative behavioral responses tailored to meet the patient’s needs.

Group Therapy

Group therapies are also standard in rehabs. As the patient spends more time at the center, they develop a sense of fellowship, and as trust grows, they feel free to share their experiences.

It is very beneficial for the patients to share their stories as it promotes emotional healing. Besides, with time the patients develop understanding and compassion for each other’s battles.

Specialized Sessions

During such sessions, the participants are guided on coping with particular situations and feelings, including anger, stress, and grief. These are the most common addiction triggers.

Family Counseling

Family is crucial in the recovery journey of an addict, as they form the closest support system one has. Besides, addiction affects the entire family. During the family therapy sessions, several feelings and issues are dealt with. Notably, family participation forms the backbone of the success of any treatment modality.

Aftercare Planning

Once you are done with your sessions at the rehab center, you and your counselor will develop an aftercare plan to reduce the risk of relapse. Aftercare is a crucial part of your recovery journey and includes transitional housing, follow-up counseling, therapy, medical evaluation, and alumni groups.

Conclusion

The recovery journey has to be a personal decision. Although it might seem scary at first, you should go in with a positive attitude. Now that you know what happens with rehab walls, do not allow what others say to stop you from seeking treatment.
